The Dallas Foundation was founded in 1929 as a community foundation primarily serving Dallas County.  A community foundation is a publicly supported charitable foundation consisting of named funds established by many different donors for the benefit of a defined geographic area, although the foundation's work may reach beyond that area.

The Foundation receives gifts from various people throughout the year.  We have a professional managed endowment of about $92 million, as of the end of our last fiscal year.  We segregate contributions for accounting purposes into one of a number of named "funds," although we pool our assets for investment purposes.

Each of our named funds legally becomes a "component fund" of the Foundation. Component funds come under the umbrellas of The Dallas Foundation's federal recognition as a tax-exempt, publicly supported charity, and our state exemption from paying sales tax.  The Metroplex Military Charitable Trust Fund (MMCTF) is a component fund of The Dallas Foundation, and therefore is entitled to all the benefits from the Foundation's tax-exempt status.

The Metroplex Military Charitable Trust, a public charity in its own right, created the MMCTF in 2002 to provide a long-term source of support for the operations and purposes of the trust.  Anyone can contribute to the MMCTF at The Dallas Foundation, and may contribute funds either for the general use of the Metroplex Military Charitable Trust, or for specific programs or purposes.  For example, a donor might designate his gift to support the ROTC program at a particular high school.  A donor may also provide that his gift will be used for permanent endowment, of which only a small percentage of which will be used annually, preserving the principal in perpetuity.
